Electrical Safety Checklist Before Hurricane Season

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, and inland Central Florida spends most of it dealing with the same thing: not catastrophic wind, but long power outages. Restoration after a major storm is prioritized by critical facilities and large circuits first, so a residential street in West Volusia can sit dark for days while crews work outward.
The electrical preparation that matters is almost all done beforehand. Here is a checklist worth working through well before the first watch is issued.
Before the season starts
Get the panel and service looked at. Storm season is the worst possible time to discover that your service is undersized or your panel is corroded. If you have breakers that trip under ordinary load, lights that dim when the air conditioning starts, or a panel with no room left in it, deal with that in the spring. A panel upgrade is a scheduled job in April and an emergency in September.
Check outdoor equipment. Meter enclosures, disconnects, pool equipment, and well pump circuits sit in Florida sun and rain year-round. Look for rust streaks, missing or cracked covers, and any enclosure that does not close properly. Water intrusion is what turns a working circuit into a hazard.
Confirm GFCI protection works. Press the test button on GFCI receptacles in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor locations. If a device does not trip when tested, or will not reset, replace it. These are the devices that matter most when everything is wet.
Trim vegetation away from the service drop. The overhead line from the pole to your house is your responsibility from the attachment point in most cases. Branches resting on it are a failure waiting for the first serious wind. If work is needed near the line itself, that is a job for the utility, not for you with a pole saw.
Decide your backup power plan now. Not during a watch. Which brings us to the single most important item on this list.
Generators: the part people get wrong
If you take nothing else from this article, take this: never back-feed your house through a dryer outlet or any other improvised connection.
It gets suggested constantly online, and it is genuinely dangerous. Feeding generator power into your home's wiring without isolating that wiring from the utility sends voltage back out through your service drop and onto the distribution transformer, where it is stepped back up. That can kill a lineworker who is working on what they have every reason to believe is a dead line. It can also destroy your generator and start a fire in your house when utility power returns unexpectedly.
The safe ways to do it are:
- A transfer switch. Permanently installed, it physically prevents the generator and the utility from being connected at the same time. This is what a standby generator uses, and it is what makes automatic operation possible.
- An inlet box with a mechanical interlock. A less expensive option for a portable generator. The interlock is a physical plate that makes it impossible to switch on the generator breaker while the main is on.
- Extension cords rated for the load, running from the generator directly to individual appliances. Perfectly safe, just limited — and the cords need to be rated for what you plug into them.
Both of the first two are permitted, inspected work for a licensed electrician. Generator installation is not a weekend project, and it is the one storm-prep item where doing it wrong endangers someone other than yourself.
Run the generator before you need it. Old fuel, a dead starting battery, or a unit that has not been exercised since last October is a common and frustrating discovery at 2 a.m.
Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near a window. Carbon monoxide from a portable generator kills people every hurricane season, including in attached garages with the door open. Outside, well away from the house, downwind, with a working CO alarm inside.
When a storm is actually coming
Charge everything. Phones, power banks, laptops, tool batteries, and any medical device with a rechargeable pack.
Turn the refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings a day ahead, and then leave the doors shut. A full freezer holds temperature far longer than an empty one.
Unplug sensitive electronics. Whole-home surge protection helps with what comes down the service line, but the cheapest protection against a surge on restoration is having the television unplugged.
Know where your main breaker is and how to shut it off. If flooding is possible, being able to kill power to the house before water reaches outlets or the panel matters. Do it while conditions are still safe, not while standing in water.
Fill the bathtub if you are on a well. No power means no pump, which means no running water. This is a common and unwelcome surprise for households in Deltona and Orange City that are not on municipal water.
After the storm
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well clear, keep others clear, and report it to the utility. Do not attempt to move a branch off a conductor.
Do not enter a flooded room with power still on. Shut the main off first, or have someone do it, before wading anywhere near receptacles or a panel.
Assume flooded electrical equipment is finished. Panels, breakers, receptacles, and hardwired appliances that have been submerged are not salvageable by drying them out. They need evaluation and, usually, replacement.
Get anything that got wet inspected before energizing it. Corrosion and contamination inside equipment are not visible from the outside, and a circuit that appears to work can still be compromised.
The short version
Most storm-season electrical trouble traces back to something that could have been handled in the spring: a service that was already marginal, outdoor equipment that was already corroded, or a generator plan that was improvised in a hurry. Fix those while the weather is boring.
